Dynamic energy market demands continuous steering

The energy market is developing at a rapid pace. Driven by the growth of renewable generation and dynamic contracts, customers are moving increasingly actively with prices and supply. This makes the energy system more flexible and efficient, as renewable supply is put to better use.

This development is accelerated by electrification and decentralised production and storage, both in households and in the business market. Think of solar panels, heat pumps, electric vehicles and batteries, which directly influence production and consumption.

Different behaviour demands different steering

For energy suppliers, this means that customer behaviour has become less predictable. Traditional, plan-based processes often fall short. In a market where supply and demand change continuously, suppliers must also be able to monitor and adjust their position continuously.

BRP-as-a-service makes realtime steering possible

Eneve has introduced BRP-as-a-service for this purpose. It allows energy suppliers to fulfil the role of Balance Responsible Party (BRP) without organising all the processes themselves. Energy suppliers can use it to steer their procurement and balance in real time. Eneve provides both software and operational support. Suppliers can steer directly via the platform, while Eneve carries out the repetitive and data-intensive processes in the background, fully in line with market conventions and without holding a trading position of its own.

The approach combines forecasts, near-realtime positions and contracting in a single cycle. Based on current insights, suppliers can actively adjust their position by trading on energy exchanges such as ETPA, steering flexibly through supply and demand. The BRP service builds on certified technology that is used by a large part of the Dutch market, covering roughly seven million connections. Suppliers can respond to customer behaviour and market dynamics, instead of hedging risks through imbalance cost premiums, which can range from roughly 5 to 250 euros per megawatt hour but are also known for far larger outliers. The approach supports a hybrid model in which suppliers stay in control while making use of specialised execution where needed.

Responding flexibly to consumption and generation is becoming crucial.

Accessible to all suppliers

The BRP service makes balancing supply and demand accessible to all energy suppliers. Where this was previously reserved mainly for larger market players, smaller energy suppliers can now take this step too. BRP-as-a-service is a first step towards an integrated offering across the entire energy value chain. Eneve supports the full chain for energy suppliers, from procurement and balancing to contracting, market communication, invoicing and customer interaction, including B2B trade capabilities. These modules can also be deployed independently, offering flexibility to energy suppliers.

Eneve, created from the merger of multiple specialised energy software companies, works for a wide group of European energy suppliers, including parties such as Vattenfall, Eneco, Essent and Engie, and dozens of other suppliers. With the backing of investor Vortex Capital Partners, the company is working on further international scale-up, including towards Spain.

The company combines technology and consultancy to make new market and business models genuinely operational and to optimise them. What used to be predictable and planned is now dynamic and steerable for energy suppliers.
